The footage of the heartbreaking incident, taken by animal advocacy group NYCLASS, shows Aisha's handlers attempting to help her up. She is eventually lifted into a horse float and taken back to her stables.  

The group is now calling for an investigation. 

'It's very clear that it's not possible for horse carriages to operate in NYC without causing tremendous suffering, cruelty and abuse to the horses,' Edita Birnkrant, executive director of NYCLASS, told CBS News.

In a statement to CBS News, Christina Hansen, a spokesperson for the NYC carriage industry, long distance limo hire said the horse probably fell due to a 'cardiac event.'

'Animal rights extremists are already exploiting this tragedy to further their anti-horse agenda during our time of grief and shock,' Hansen said. 

'This medical emergency appears to be something that could happen to any horse, any time, anywhere, for any number of reasons, under a wide variety of conditions.'

The incident has also caught the attention of New York's Mayor Bill de Blasio, who pledged in his first campaign in 2013 to ban horse carriges.   

He has yet to deliver on that promise, but called Saturday's video painful. 

In a tweet, JetBlack he said: 'The video of a horse collapsing ad dying in Central Park yesterday is painful and says so much about a persistent problem.

'We've made real progress in animal welfare but we must go further. The NYPD's Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad is on the case and WILL get answers.' 

In 2016, a deal fell apart that would have greatly reduced the number of carriages in the city.
