How To Attract Hedgehogs To A UK Garden

Hedgehogs are one of the most recognisable mammals to visit British gardens after dark, often covering a surprising distance, sometimes a mile or more, over a single night as they forage. A garden that offers a route in, something to eat and somewhere quiet to rest is far more likely to see repeat visits than one that is sealed off and tidied within an inch of its life.

Feeding is straightforward but worth getting right. Meaty cat or dog food, or a specialist hedgehog food, is a better choice than bread and milk, which can cause digestive upset. A shallow dish of fresh water left out overnight is just as useful as food, particularly during dry spells in summer.

Easy access matters most. A shallow, gently sloping edge lets amphibians move in and out of the water without difficulty, while steep, hard-edged ponds can be surprisingly difficult for them to use. Nearby damp, shady spots, a log pile or a compost heap close to the pond, give them somewhere to shelter and hibernate once they leave the water for the colder months.

Winter care is really about restraint. Amphibians often spend the coldest months dormant in mud at the pond bottom, so the pond is best left undisturbed rather than cleared out or heavily managed during this period. If the surface freezes over, gently melting a small area with warm water is a gentler approach than breaking the ice directly above where they may be sheltering.

Nematodes are microscopic roundworms that occur naturally in soil, and certain species have been developed for use against specific garden pests. Rather than acting as a broad chemical treatment, each nematode species is matched to a particular pest, seeking it out bee and pollinator garden supplies interrupting its lifecycle with far less impact on the rest of the garden than a chemical spray.

Plant choice shapes how much a garden offers wildlife across the year, and it is about more than flowers alone. Shape, structure, timing and what a plant offers after flowering, whether berries, seed heads or dense cover, all matter as much as bloom colour.
